§ Mr. Moateasked the Minister for the Civil Service what capital sum payments are made to the estates of civil servants who die before retirement.
§ Mr. Kenneth BakerThe capital sum payable on the death of a serving civil servant is one year's pay or, if greater, the lump sum which would have been paid on medical retirement. This sum, less any outstanding contributions to the widows' scheme, is payable to the surviving wife or husband, if the civil servant has so nominated; otherwise it is payable to the personal representatives of the deceased.
