HL Deb 09 August 1972 vol 334 c1266WA
LORD COTTESLOE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What arrangements they have made for the completion of the National Theatre on the South Bank and the furnishing of the building for the Museum of London.

THE PAYMASTER GENERAL (VISCOUNT ECCLES)

The Government and the G.L.C. will make available an additional £2.3 million to complete the building of the National Theatre. The Government will provide £1.35 million for the building to be completed to the agreed specification and a further sum of £600,000 towards the improvements desired by the South Bank Theatre Board, bringing the total Government contribution to £5.7 million. The Leader of the Greater London Council, Sir Desmond Plummer, has undertaken, with the support of the Leader of the Opposition, Sir Reginald Goodwin, to recommend the Council to increase its contribution to the building of the National Theatre by £350,000, making a total of £4.1 million.

The Government will also increase its contribution to the furnishing and equipping of the building for the Museum of London from £150,000 to £300,000.

The necessary legislation to provide authority for the increased contributions to the cost of the National Theatre and the Museum of London will be introduced as soon as possible.

House adjourned at twenty-two minutes past eleven o'clock.
