§ Mr. Ashtonasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will carry out an investigation into the reasons for the death of several hundred roach in the lake at Clumber Park and take steps to reduce the level of growth of algae in the shallow water.
§ Mr. PriorI understand that the Trent River Authority, within whose area Clumber Park falls, is already investigating the reasons for the death of fish in the lake and the waters immediately downstream.
It appears that the fish may have died of gill haemorrhage caused by high alkalinity in the lake water produced as a result of excessive algae growth this year.
Algae are a normal feature in the lake and usually do not cause harm to fish.
Their control would be difficult and expensive.
