§ 32. Mr. Thomas Coxasked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what projects involving participation by local communities are now under consideration by his Department.
§ Mr. David HowellSuch projects are a normal part of the work of most Northern Ireland Departments. Local community participation is a special feature of the programme administered by the Ministry of Community Relations under the Social Need (Grants) Act (Northern Ireland), 1970.
Some of the measures which I announced on 27th July should also help to stimulate local activity: in particular the creation of a direct labour organisation to carry out a wide range of local schemes; accelerated public expenditure on community centres and indoor sports centres; and the expansion of the industrial training programme to provide pockets of suitably trained workers in areas of high unemployment.
