asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the work of the children's panels.

The system of children's hearings has, in general, been working well during its first year. I should like to pay a warm tribute to all those who have contributed to this successful beginning, and, in particular, to the panel members who have given so much of their time to this important public service. I have recently appointed about 400 panel members in addition to the 850 appointed initially.

The provisional statistics for 1971 are as follows:
