Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will make a statement on his decision to appoint Mr. David Lancaster Nicolson as Chairman of the British Airways Board at a salary of £13,000 per annum on a part-time basis; why this appointment was made on this basis and not full time; how many hours per week or per annum Mr. Nicolson will work; and whether he will additionally maintain his other directorships.
§ Mr. John DaviesI appointed Mr. Nicolson because I am satisfied that he is the best man to do this job. His salary is £13,500 per annum. He will devote some two-thirds of his time to the job. He will retain certain of his directorships and withdraw from others.
