HC Deb 16 November 1971 vol 826 c117W
Mrs. Lena Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science why, in assessing the grant payable to a married woman student over 18 years of age, she takes into account the father's income, not the husband's.

Mr. van Straubenzee

One of the principles of the awards system is that parents are expected to contribute, according to their means, to the higher education of their children, and that the income of a student's wife or husband is not taken into account. It would not be possible to make special arrangements for married women students over 18 without introducing far-reaching changes into the present awards system.
