HC Deb 16 November 1971 vol 826 cc121-2W
Mr. Michael Cocks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what spot checks are undertaken by officials of his Department on the security of lorry loads; and how many officials are employed in this work.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

Road safety spot checks including, where appropriate, checks on load security are carried out on about 17,000 heavy goods vehicles each month by my Department's 181 traffic examiners.

Mr. Michael Cocks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will introduce legislation to ensure the covering of loads of loose material and loads of machinery with detachable parts.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

No. But my right hon. Friend is preparing a code of practice on safe loading in consultation with industry.
