HL Deb 27 May 1971 vol 319 cc1433-4WA

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many fatal accidents at night and by day and how many severely injured persons there have been on the roads among pedestrians taking part in sponsored charity walks; and whether Her Majesty's Government are empowered and intend to confine these walks to bridle paths or to routes approved by the police.

I regret that separate figures of people killed and seriously injured on sponsored walks are not available. The Government have no powers to restrict these walks in the way proposed and would be reluctant to seek them, but my right honourable friend the Minister for Transport Industries is examining the present arrangements to see if any changes are necessary.

House adjourned, for the Whitsun Recess, at twenty-four minutes past six o'clock, until Tuesday, June 8, 1971.
