HC Deb 25 May 1971 vol 818 c89W
Dr. Gilbert

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what, in calculating the average specific gravity of beer subject to duty in any year, the Customs and Excise use, the mean, the median or the mode of the total range of specific gravities; and whether they weight their calculations for the volumes involved.

Mr. Higgins

The average gravities of beer published by Customs and Excise are weighted mean gravities, calculated from the original gravities and net quantities of the unfermented worts on which duty has been charged.
