Mr. William Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and industry (1) whether he will introduce legislation to ensure that all life insurance policies for over £1,000 sum assured are valid only if they are contracted through recognised insurance bodies, or qualified professional advisers who owe a professional responsibility to the insured;

(2) whether he will introduce legislation to ensure that insurance agents employed by or commissioned by insurance companies are declared to be agents of the company and to ensure that the company is responsible for all their representations in the cause of their employment.

These suggestions will be taken into account in the review to which my right hon. Friend referred on 10th March in reply to a Question from my hon. Friend the Member for Leicester, South West (Mr. Boardman).
