asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will state for the years 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, the total numbers of staff involved in, and the total expenditure of public funds on: (1) Administration of Immigration Controls; (2) work on Nationality and Citizenship questions; and (3) the Immigration Service.

Figures for Home Office staff in post on October 1, 1960, and in each year from 1965 onwards are given below. Information is not available for earlier years.

Estimates of expenditure as given in the Explanatory Memoranda to the Expiring Laws Continuance Bills for 1965 and subsequent years are:

1965, £2.5 million; 1966, £2.9 million; 1967, £3.3 million; 1968, £3.8 million; 1969, £4.2 million; 1970, £5.5 million.

These figures do not include expenditure on work on nationality and citizenship questions, but from 1968 onwards includes expenditure in other Departments and in the Aliens Registration Office of the Metropolitan Police Office.
