HC Deb 16 March 1971 vol 813 c293W
Mr. Money

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many accused persons who had been refused bail by a magistrates' court were subsequently admitted to it by a higher court or judge in chambers during the most recent year for which figures are available.

Mr. Carlisle

Separate figures relating to applicants refused bail by magistrates' courts are not available, but in 1969 the total number of applications for bail made to a judge in chambers was approximately 9,600, or which it is estimated that nearly 10 per cent. were successful.

Mr. Money

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many accused persons admitted to bail failed to surrender to stand their trial during the most recent year for which figures are available;

(2) how many accused persons admitted to bail were convicted of further offences committed whilst bailed during the most recent year for which figures are available.

Mr. Carlisle

I regret that this information is not available.
