Miss Devlin

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether Chief Inspector Peter Darke in the course of his activities in the North of Ireland acts in accordance with the instructions of the Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary or other members of that force; and whether he will make a statement, outlining what persons within his Department have responsibility for this man's activities;

(2) whether Chief Superintendent Eric Peyton has been constituted as part of the civil authority in Northern Ireland; by what person and on what occasions; and whether he will make a statement.
