§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what plans she has substantially to expand the amount of expenditure at present devoted to research on the treatment and remedy of schizophrenia.
§ Mrs. ThatcherThe Medical Research Council supports a wide programme of research on mental health, including studies of the causes and treatment of schizophrenia, both through its own units and in universities. The' deployment of the funds available is a matter for scientific judgment and cannot be predicted in advance, but research in mental health is regarded by the council as one of the principal areas to which support should be given.
