§ 23. Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to what extent the imposition of the new and increased meat import duties, beginning on 5th July, 1971, will further in crease the price of meats in particular and food in general.
§ Mr. PriorThe levy scheme for beef is not expected to have any effect on retail prices this year. Market forces will determine the effect of the new duty on lamb—which, at less than ½ per lb. is currently equivalent to about 2 per cent. of average retail prices. The combined effect of these new schemes on the food index in the period to July, 1972 is put at less than one quarter of 1 per cent.
