§ 96. Mr. Wilkinsonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will authorise the systematic monitoring of air pollution in major cities and in particular sulphur dioxide levels in urban atmospheres with a view to introducing legislation to reduce motor vehicle exhaust pollution and industrial pollution through technical regulations or to limit the movement of motor vehicles in cities at times of severe air pollution or both.
§ Mr. Peter WalkerSmoke and sulphur dioxide are already monitored at over 1,000 sites throughout the country, most of them in towns, and the results are coordinated by the Warren Spring Laboratory, so as to guide us in controlling pollution from industry and vehicles. I am writing to my hon. Friend about the further controls I intend to introduce, including new regulations about emissions from vehicles.
