HC Deb 15 February 1971 vol 811 cc340-1W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the lowest and average earnings, respectively, in each region of the United Kingdom at the latest available date.

Mr. Bryan

The following estimates relating to April 1970 were obtained from the New Earnings Survey. The survey did not cover Northern Ireland.

GROSS WEEKLY EARNINGS (EXCLUDING INCOME IN KIND) IN APRIL, 1970 OF FULL-TIME MANUAL AND NON-MANUAL MEN AGED 21 AND OVER IN GREAT BRITAIN WHOSE PAY IN THE SURVEY PERIOD WAS NOT AFFECTED BY ABSENCE
Region Lowest Decile Median Average
£ £ £
South East 18.7 28.8 32.6
East Anglia 16.4 24.8 27.0
South Western 16.9 25.3 27.8
West Midlands 19.3 29.0 30.9
East Midlands 17.5 26.1 28.0
Yorkshire and Humberside 17.2 25.8 27.9
North Western 17.9 27.0 29.5
Northern 17.1 26.3 28.5
Wales 17.6 27.0 28.8
Scotland 16.6 26.0 28.3
GREAT BRITAIN 17.8 27.2 30.0

All the estimates are subject to sampling error. The earnings of 10 per cent. of such men in the particular region were below the lowest decile and the earnings of 50 per cent. below the median. Corresponding results for women aged 18 and over have been published in the January, 1971, issue of the Department of Employment Gazette. If part-time workers, juveniles and those whose pay was affected by absence were included, the figures would of course be lower.
