Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the amount of grant aid paid in the last two years, respectively, to British Rail in Scotland for unremunerative rail services; and if he will state the grant allocation intended for this purpose in each future year.

For 1969 very slightly more than £10 million; for 1970 about £9.7 million. For 1971 grant undertakings totalling some £9.9 million are in force. The total figure for 1972 cannot yet be given.
