HC Deb 04 February 1971 vol 810 c414W
34. Mr. David Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the maximum grant payable to a first-degree student at a redbrick university, living away from home, in January, 1961, and in January, 1971; and what is the latter amount expressed in 1961 purchasing power.

Mr. van Straubenzee

In January, 1961, £255 for students living in college or hall and £240 for those in lodgings. In addition, most L.E.A.s paid vacation grants of up to £25 where the parents' net income fell below £1,400. These rates were later replaced by a single rate, which in January, 1971, was £380, including a grant of £38 towards vacation maintenance. Based on increases in the general retail price index this represents a purchasing power of £250 in 1961.
