asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what directions she has given for further cuts in research expenditure over and above the £5 million announced last October; what is her estimate of the amount by which medical research will be affected; and if she will make a statement.

Until the review of research council expenditure referred to in Cmnd. 4578 is complete, I cannot say how the research supported by the Medical Research Council will be affected.
