HC Deb 04 February 1971 vol 810 cc415-6W
39. Mr. Marks

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many of the 1,300 independent schools which are not recognised as efficient have been refused recognition because of inadequate buildings and how many because of unsatisfactory teaching.

Mr. van Straubenzee

The great majority of the unrecognised independent schools are day schools which have never applied, or been considered, for recognition as efficient. Recognition was refused to, or withdrawn from, 139 schools considered since 1968 and still in existence in December, 1970, in seven cases because of inadequate buildings, in nine because of unsatisfactory teaching and in 123 for both of these reasons.
