HC Deb 02 February 1971 vol 810 cc359-60W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action he is taking to raise the issue of drug-taking among school pupils at the United Nations Narcotics Commission.

Mr. Anthony Royle

The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs is aware of the dangers of drug-taking by young people and is taking these into account in its various activities.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs who represents British interests at the International Narcotics Control Board at Geneva; and what action he is taking through the International Narcotics Control Board to prevent illicit drugs being imported into Great Britain.

Mr. Anthony Royle

The members of the International Narcotics Control Board serve in their personal capacities and are required to be impartial and independent. They are specifically precluded from acting under the instructions of their own Governments.

The Board is responsible for supervising the implementation by Governments of the narcotics treaties currently in force and, in this context, assists in preventing illegal drugs being imported into the United Kingdom.
