HC Deb 02 February 1971 vol 810 c300W
37. Mr. Frank Allaun

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the current salaries of medical laboratory technicians working in hospitals, and on how they compare with salaries for civil servants of similar grade and with technicians in industry.

Mr. Alison

Salaries since April, 1970, have been £1,129–£1,443 for the basic qualified grade and £2,294–£2,753 for the highest grade. I understand that they are broadly comparable with salaries in the Scientific Civil Service and industry although some adjustments are under discussion in the Whitley Council following a recent job comparison with corresponding grades in Government establishments.

76. Mr, Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is aware of the discontent of medical laboratory technicians working in hospitals regarding their salary structure; if he is aware of the discrepancy between their salaries and those paid to civil servants and technicians in industry doing a similar job; and if he will take steps to improve the position.

Mr. Alison

I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Salford, East (Mr. Frank Allaun) today.
