HL Deb 16 December 1971 vol 326 c1338WA
THE EARL OF SELKIRK

asked Her Majesty's Government:

By what date the dual-carriage road to Southampton will be completed from London; and whether serious difficulties are being encountered in respect of the final stretch.

LORD SANDFORD

The 28-mile section of the M3 Motorway between Light-water in Surrey and Popham in Hampshire is already open and the remaining section from Sunbury to Lightwater is due for completion by the end of 1973. A public inquiry has been held to hear objections to a draft scheme for the extension of the motorway from Popham to connect with the dual carriageway A.33 Otterbourne and Chandlers Ford By-pass into Southampton. The inspector's report has been published so that there may be consultations with those affected by variations recommended by the inspector. It is too early to say when this extension is likely to be constructed.
