asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what research into the causes of behavioural problems in schools is being carried out by her Department.

Mrs. Thatcher

A number of projects undertaken within the past few years and three current projects supported by my Department bear on these problems. The following is a list:

RESEARCH RELEVANT TO CAUSES OF BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEMS IN SCHOOLS, SUPPORTED BY THE DEPARTMENT

A. Past Projects

  1. 1. Research into the teaching of E.S.N. children: Department of Education, University College of Swansea, 1962–1967.
  2. 2. Research on the social adjustment of deaf children: Department of Youth Work, University of Manchester, 1963–1968.
  3. 3. Development and testing of a first school medical examination incorporating items which will identify neuro-developmental disorders likely to interfere with learning or behaviour; University of London Institute of Education (Professor Tizard). Medical examination given to school entrants in the Isle of Wight in 1967: followed up in 1969 and 1970.
  4. 4. Investigation of possible effects upon children of mother going out to work; National Children's Bureau 1969–70.
  5. 5. A sociological study of schools in the Manchester area; Department of Sociology, University of Manchester, 1962–1967.

B. Current Projects

  1. 6. Investigation of the special educational treatment of autistic children; in progress at the London University Institute of Psychiatry (Dr. Michael Rutter).
  2. 7. Research on maladjustment; University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1969–1976.
  3. 8. A study of factors affecting the attitudes, behaviour and attainment of pupils in primary and secondary schools; National Foundation for Educational Research, 1964–1971 (jointly with the Home Office).
