HC Deb 05 August 1971 vol 822 cc386-7W
Mr. Nott

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, taking the United Kingdom General and Parliamentary Constituency Tables contained in the 1966 Census, if he will show the percentage breakdown for comparison purposes for the United Kingdom, Cornwall and the St. Ives Parliamentary Division, respectively, of an abbreviated breakdown of the population by sex and age (Table 2), the population by economic activity (Table 4), an abbreviated breakdown of the active and retired population by socioeconomic group (Table 6), and the number of private households owning cars (Table 13).

Mr. Alison

I have been asked to reply.

Not all the figures asked for are available on comparable bases. The figures published for Parliamentary constituencies were obtained by aggregating figures from enumeration districts and as the boundary of constituencies sometimes divided enumeration districts some approximation in constituency figures results. The figures for Cornwall and Isles of Scilly refer to the administrative county except for the analysis by economic groups. The figures for the county are not analysed according to activity and the statistics for Cornwall shown below are based on aggregates of the figures for the Cornish constituencies.

No information was collected in Northern Ireland in the 1966 Census about occupation or car ownership and, therefore, no figures are available about socioeconomic grouping or car ownership for the United Kingdom; the tables below dealing with these subjects give figures
