asked the Prime Minister what representations he has received from the North-East of England about the future of the Inland Revenue Computer Centre at Washington New Town, County Durham; and, in view of 3,000 new jobs being involved in this pro ject, what action he is taking following such representations.

A letter which I received last month from the North-East Development Council referred briefly to the computer centre. My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer is aware of the need to reach a decision on its future as soon as possible.
