HL Deb 04 August 1971 vol 323 c1255WA
LORD FRASER OF LONSDALE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, with a view to accelerating the pacification of Ulster they will approve of the detention of suspects as under"18B"during the 1939–45 war years.

THE MINISTER OF STATE, HOME OFFICE (LORD WINDLESIIAM)

The Northern Ireland Government already have powers to detain or intern persons suspected of acting or having acted or being about to act in a manner prejudicial to the preservation of the peace and the maintenance of order. Any decision to use these powers must take into account the assessment made, in the first instance, by the security authorities as to their likely result.
