HC Deb 28 April 1971 vol 816 c132W
113. Mr. Golding

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many road accidents occurred during each of the last five years due to vehicle mechanical faults.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

In many cases it cannot be established whether or to what extent mechanical faults contribute to accidents but in 1969 the number of vehicles involved in injury accidents with reported defects were as follows:

Brakes 1,830
Tyres 2,091
Lighting 884
Trafficators 151
Other vehicles with suspected defects 5,846

Figures for 1970 are not yet available and comparable data for earlier years were not collected.
