HC Deb 29 October 1970 vol 805 cc182-3W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department by what authority the Metropolitan Police use their private vehicles unlicensed, uninsured, and without road worthy certificates and park these on yellow banded areas.

Mr. Sharples

The law relating to vehicle excise, third-party insurance, test certificates and parking applies to vehicles privately owned by members of police forces when used for private purposes as it applies to those of other members of the public.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action he has taken or intends taking to prevent the growing practice of police using their private vehicles whilst unlicensed, in view of the details supplied to him of this offence by the hon. Member for West Ham, North.

Mr. Sharples

Any such offence alleged by the hon. Member, or anyone else, is fully investigate if enough detail is given; I have no reason to think that the practice is either prevalent or growing.
