HC Deb 24 November 1970 vol 807 cc101-2W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will state the amount allowed to higher paid civil servants and Ministers of the Crown to cover their hotel and away from home expenses when engaged on public duties at the date when Members of Parliament's salaries were increased in October, 1964; and on how many occasions and by what amounts this allowance has been increased since to take account of the rise in total costs and living away from home expenses.

Mr. David Howell

In October, 1964, the night subsistence allowance (which covers a period of 24 hours) payable to Ministers of the Crown and senior civil servants was 63s. a night. In March, 1967, the allowance was increased to 80s. and a special rate of 88s. was introduced for central London. These rates were increased to 104s. (London) and 95s. (elsewhere) in November, 1968, and to 120s. (London) and 110s. (elsewhere) in April, 1970. Lower rates apply after 30 nights and for regular visits.
