HC Deb 12 November 1970 vol 806 c238W
70. Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Minister of State for Defence why in Waterloo Place, Londonderry, on 11th September, 1970, the Army authorities permitted eight hours of persistent rioting by residents of the Bogside before using CS gas.

Mr. Ian Gilmour

I am aware of no such disturbances on 11th September, 1970.

71. Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Minister of State for Defence what were the circumstances which led to the firing of CS gas by the Army without warning amongst a crowd in support of the Apprentice Boys of Londonderry on the lower deck of Craigavon Bridge, Londonderry, on 12th August, 1970; and why the usual procedure of giving due warning was departed from.

Mr. Ian Gilmour

A warning was in fact given shortly before CS was used.
