HC Deb 11 November 1970 vol 806 cc199-200W
Mr. Finsberg

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will provide a list of the national museums and galleries to which it is proposed to make an entrance charge; and if, in her discussions with the appropriate authorities, she will propose the possibility of free admission on one day per week, free admission to researchers at institutions such as the British Museum, and a free or reduced admission to bona fide students.

Mr. van Straubenzee

It is intended that entrance fees will be introduced at all the national museums and galleries. They are:

London—British Museum, British Museum (Natural History), Science Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Geological Museum, National Gallery, Tate Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, London Museum, National Maritime Museum, Wallace Collection, Imperial War Museum.

Scotland—Royal Scottish Museum, National Gallery, National Gallery of Modern Art, National Portrait Gallery, National Museum of Antiquities.

Wales—National Museum of Wales.

The possibility of cheap or free admission on certain days of the week and of cheap or free admission to some categories of visitors is being discussed with the Trustees of the institutions.
