HC Deb 10 November 1970 vol 806 cc113-4W
Mr. Laurance Reed

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether, in view of recent interest in the health of the environment, he will re-examine the possibilities of utilising tidal power around the coasts as a source of pollution-free energy.

Mr. Ridley

No. The merits and economics of tidal power are kept under review by the Department and I can see no reason for instituting a special investigation at this time. While it is true that tidal power does not cause atmospheric pollution, the massive civil engineering work would not be without impact on the environment nor would the ecology of the area be undisturbed.
