HC Deb 09 November 1970 vol 806 cc52-3W
Mr. Dormand

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science for what subjects there is a shortage of teachers in secondary schools; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. van Straubenzee

The greatest shortage is of graduate teachers of mathematics and physics, and next of graduate teachers of biology, chemistry, English and French. Numbers of graduate teachers in all these subjects, except mathematics, are increasing. Numbers of graduates, including mathematics graduates, entering training have been rising rapidly in recent years, but will need to increase still further to satisfy needs.
