HC Deb 04 November 1970 vol 805 c386W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what action he now proposes to take to prevent repetition of the accident caused by petrol fire on the Manchester Ship Canal; what consideration is being given to the need to improve safety regulations for fuel loading on the Canal; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Anthony Grant

Following the successful prosecution of the master of the vessel responsible for the spillage which led to the fire, it was decided not to order a formal investigation. However, experts from the Department and the Home Office have studied the circumstances of the accident and have held meetings with the parties concerned. A number of measures have been taken to reduce the risk of another such accident and we are considering the wider application of the lessons that have been learnt.
