HC Deb 02 November 1970 vol 805 cc241-2W
38. Mr. Ellis

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what is his estimate of the present annual increase in the United Kingdom consumption of energy expressed as millions of tons of coal-equivalent; how his compares with the figure for world consumption from figures available to him from international sources; and what proportion of these increases during the next decade he estimates will be met by coal, petroleum fuels, nuclear power, and other sources of energy.

Mr. Ridley

Energy consumption in the United Kingdom has been rising annually by about 6 to 7 million tons of coal equivalent compared with an annual increase of about 200 million tons in world consumption. The share of the different fuels in the increased demand for energy will depend mainly on their relative prices and convenience; it is a hazardous business estimating shares of the market.
