Mr. Hornby asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total cost in the current year of all research establishments in the public sector, including those which come directly under Government Departments, those which come under the research councils, those which are under the Atomic Energy Authority, but excluding those which are the direct responsibility of nationalised industries.

Mr. Edward Short:

The gross expenditure on scientific research and development carried out within Government establishments, including research councils and local authorities in the United Kingdom in 1967–68 was £238.7 million. In 1968–69 the corresponding figure is provisionally estimated at £265 million.
