HC Deb 11 May 1970 vol 801 c229W
88. Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT a table showing the numbers, grades and locations of industrial civil servants employed by his Department who are expected to become redundant in each of the next three years.

Mr. Hattersley:

The information is not readily available in the form requested. The approximate number of industrial civil servants known to be affected by decisions already announced to close, amalgamate or relocate establishments in the three years ending on 31st March 1973 is as follows: 1970–71, 2,300; 1971–72, 800; and 1972–73, 1,400. The effect of other adjustments cannot yet be assessed.

Not all the employees noted above will be discharged as redundant. Retirements and wastage without replacement, the retention of staff where a station is to be used for another defence purpose, and transfers to other government employment will assist in the run-down and lessen the impact on existing employees.
