§ Mr. Arthur Lewis
asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that a number of five-ton rubbish lorries, now being used on road-building work on his 200W behalf, are not licensed and insured in accordance with the law; and what action he takes to ensure that the various contractors and sub-contractors employed by him and his agents on work connected with road-building use vehicles which are correctly licensed and insured.
Mr. Bob Brown:
All Ministry contractors are expected to comply with the law so far as their own lorries are concerned and to take reasonable steps to ensure that any sub-contractors also comply. The attention of all major contractors was drawn to the problem of illegal operation as recently as 30th April and their co-operation was sought in bringing about its reduction. Enforcement action is also taken by Ministry examiners where appropriate.
