HC Deb 07 May 1970 vol 801 cc174-6W
Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity how many registered unemployed persons in the Stornoway area have taken places at Government training centres in each of the last eight years; and how many are at present undergoing training.

Mr. Dell:

This information is not readily available for the whole period in the form requested. 91 applications for training have been received from Stornoway in the last eight years and 42 men from this area have completed courses during the last three years. There are six in training at present, four of whom were unemployed when they applied for training.

Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity how many disabled persons, registered at Stornoway, have been found jobs in the area in each of the last 10 years; and what progress is being made with provision of suitable work locally for disabled people.

Mr. Dell:

Figures are readily available only from 1962. They are as follows:

1965 11
1966 15
1967 8

Mr. Dell:

42. All these were placed in their training trades, 13 locally and 29 in other areas.

Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what was the average and the lowest percentage of unemployment on the Stornoway register in each of the past 10 years; and what measures are being taken to supplement the effect of the activities of the Highlands and Islands Development Board in providing new industrial jobs in this area.

Mr. Dell:

Suitable developments in the Stornoway area would be eligible for development area assistance under the Local Employment Acts and the Industrial Development Act provided that similar assistance had not been or was not being, obtained from the Highlands and Islands Development Board.
