§ 69. Mr. Henigasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what progress he is now making towards signing a new agreement with Libya.
§ Mr. Foley:As the House will recall, the Libyan Government last October requested the termination of the AngloLibyan Treaty of Friendship and Alliance of 1953, which was the basis of our relationship with the previous Government, and the withdrawal of British forces from Libya. The latter request has already been met, and the formal termination of the 1953 Treaty is one of the subjects covered by the continuing negotiations we are conducting with the Libyan Government with a view to establishing a new relationship on a new basis.
