HC Deb 26 March 1970 vol 798 cc548-9W
Mr. Randall

asked the Secretary of State for Local Government and Regional Planning if he will make a statement on the action being taken to promote the further economic development of the Northern Region, its environment and attraction to tourists, and on the encouragement being given to the building of more hotels.

Mr. Urwin

I would refer my hon. Friend to my speech in the Debate on 1st December, 1969, on Development of the Economy and Environment of the Region.

The Northern Economic Planning Council and the three regional travel associations are currently in touch with the British Tourist Association and the English Tourist Board about provision for tourism in the Region. Grants are available under the Development of Tourism Act for certain hotel developments, while loans may be made by the Development Commission to encourage small hotels in rural parts of the Development Area.
