HC Deb 16 March 1970 vol 798 cc73-4W
Mrs. Ewing

asked the Minister of Transport if he will introduce legislation to provide that none of the cost of the Channel Tunnel will fall on Scottish taxpayers.

Mr. Bob Brown

No. In any case the Channel Tunnel is not expected to be a burden on the taxpayer.

Mrs. Ewing

asked the Minister of Transport what studies he is conducting into the effect on Scottish transport of the Channel Tunnel project.

Mr. Bob Brown

The tunnel would make possible through passenger and freight trains between Scotland and the Continent. In the studies which will precede the decision whether to start construction, estimates will be made of traffic which the tunnel would generate and traffic which would be diverted to it from other routes.
