HC Deb 05 March 1970 vol 797 c155W
78. Mr. Astor

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many teachers of mentally-handicapped children hold, and do not hold, respectively, the Training Council's Diploma.

Dr. John Dunwoody

On 30th September, 1969, 873 or 38.6 per cent. of teachers of mentally handicapped children employed in junior training centres in England held the training council's diploma, and 1,387 were not so qualified. 1969 figures for those employed in hospital schools are not yet available, but on 30th September, 1968, 88, or 14.4 per cent. of the total teaching staff, were diploma holders, and a further 49, or 8 per cent., were qualified Burnham teachers. No separate record is kept of Burnham qualified teachers in junior training centres; the number is negligible.
