asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the total sum spent by the central Government on roads in Wales in the post-war period.

Central Government expenditure on roads over the years 1945–46 to 1969–70 (inclusive) was of the order of £195 million, of which about £80 million was spent between 1965–66 and 1969–70. Expenditure on lighting is not included in this figure. In addition financial assistance has been given since 1st April, 1967, towards local authority expenditure on roads through the payment of rate support grant.
