HC Deb 02 March 1970 vol 797 cc45-6W
Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland by what date he now expects the population of Scotland to reach the level indicated in paragraph 21 of Command Paper No. 2864, assuming that the average rate of annual population change which has occurred since the publication of that document were to be extrapolated into the future.

Mr. Ross

In the light of the complete reversal of migration trends in recent years, it would be unrealistic to make an extrapolation in the way the hon. Member suggests.

Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what net increase in the population of Scotland will be required in the current calendar year to bring it up to the 5.3 million level indicated as a possible order of population size in paragraph 21 of Command Paper No. 2864; and how this estimate compares with the actual out turn in each of the past five years.

Mr. Ross

I refer the hon. Member to my reply to his Question of 24th February.—[Vol. 796, c.311.]
