HC Deb 02 March 1970 vol 797 cc24-5W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what plans he has for the future provision of nursery schools, play groups and day care classes; and what is the total sum allocated from public funds and the estimated number of places.

Miss Lestor

Under the first two phases of the urban programme nearly 12,700 additional places are being provided in nursery classes and day nurseries at an estimated cost of £4.7 million. In addition, about £150,000 is being allocated by way of aid to voluntary playgroups in 43 areas but it is not possible to say precisely how many groups will benefit or how many additional places will be provided. Further allocations under the programme will be made in due course. Outside the urban programme £90,000 has been allocated in 1969–70 for the provision of 120 additional places in day nurseries.
