HC Deb 24 July 1970 vol 804 cc244-5W
Mr. Judd

asked the Minister of State for Defence whether he will make a statement on the effectiveness of torpedo warheads at present in service with the Royal Navy.

Mr. Kirk

Some of the detonators for arming the warheads of certain submarine launched torpedoes have recently been found, by routine inspection, to have become shock sensitive. Pending their replacement restrictions have been placed on their use in peacetime so as to avoid any risk at all to the boats concerned. However, our torpedoes and their warheads remain fully effective and would be used normally in operations in war.
